It is a service center for examinees, training centers and master examination boards.

Advice on environmental, climate protection and construction issues

The Center for Energy, Water and Environmental Technology, or ZEWU for short, founded in 1985 by the Hamburg Chamber of Crafts, moved into the new building of the Elbcampus in 2008. ZEWU has been offering practice-oriented advice on environmental and climate protection issues since it was founded. It is the contact point for builders, craftsmen, planners and companies from the Hamburg metropolitan region who want professional energy advice. ZEWUmobil + , Energiebauzentrum and Solarzentrum Hamburg are the names of the ZEWU partner projects that are located in the Elbe campus. With these projects, interested visitors receive new ideas, concrete help through advice and crucial contacts when it comes to questions about the use of energy-saving technologies in their company or when building a house.

Building history

The Elbcampus was built in the southern area of the so-called station lens in Hamburg-Neuland on a plot of around 27,500 m². In preparation for the building project, a public architectural competition was launched in December 2003. 415 offices applied, including many well-known architects. 26 of them were selected to participate, 25 submitted contributions. All competition works were presented to the public in the premises of the former Karstadt building in Altona. PFP Prof. Friedrich & Partner from Hamburg won first prize in the architectural competition.

The foundation stone was laid in September 2005, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated in September 2006 and the Elbe Campus was inaugurated in September 2008.

The construction was funded with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research by the Federal Institute for Vocational Training, funds from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor from the Federal Office for Economics and Export Control and funds from the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg by the Authority for Education and Sport.

Main entrance to the Elbcampus

The Elbcampus sets an urban accent at an important entrance area to Harburg city center. The compact, square structure is embedded in a sunken garden canal. The three-storey structure is raised by a two-storey building block in an east-west direction. The building complex has several inner courtyards. The Elbcampus has a total area of 23,000 m². It is built using a reinforced concrete skeleton construction and rests on 580 foundation piles.

The building received the following awards:

  • October 2008: Yearbook “Architecture in Hamburg” Award ceremony “Best Projects 1989 - 2008”, 1st prize
  • November 2010: BDA Hamburg Architecture Prize 2010, 1st prize

Heating mode with ice storage and gas heat pump

For heating in the winter months, the summer heat is used in the Elbcampus and, conversely, in summer the building is cooled with the ice formed in winter. The basis for this system is the combination of a large thermal solar ice store and a gas absorption heat pump. The well-insulated basin set into the ground holds 150 m³ of water. In summer, this water absorbs the excess heat from the building via heat exchangers inside the storage tank. In winter, the heat available in the storage tank is used for heating. So much heat is extracted from the water that ice forms. In total, you can generate 30–40% more heat for heating than if you burned natural gas directly in a condensing boiler.

As a demonstration project during operation, the system only supplies the Elbcampus with cold and heat to a small extent, while other equally efficient systems such as the combined heat and power unit and the absorption chiller are the main suppliers. While the system is in operation, this technology is to be further investigated for its benefits in terms of supplying buildings with low greenhouse gas emissions.
