The Elbe bridge Torgau is a 350 m long railway bridge that spans the Elbe in Torgau at river kilometer 155.53 .

history

Old bridge

The bridge was first put into operation in the spring of 1872 as part of the construction of the Halle-Sorau-Gubener Railway , an important east-west connection in Prussia , at route kilometers 78.39. As early as 1896, the double-track expansion followed with another bridge. In 1912 the older superstructures were replaced by new ones, in 1925 the younger ones from 1896. In April 1945 German troops blew up four superstructures, but the single-track reconstruction began in July 1945 and was completed after six weeks.

The old age and the poor condition of the superstructures restricted the permissible load. In addition, a bridge pillar in the Elbe hindered shipping. Therefore, in 1996 the construction of a new single-track bridge began next to the old structure, which was put into operation on June 15, 1997. This was followed by the dismantling of the old superstructures and the demolition of the pillars . The possibility of later building another bridge for the second track was kept open. The approximately 7.0 m high, striking natural stone gate structures at the two ends of the bridge were removed and rebuilt in a clear distance of 12.25 m from a historical preservation point of view.

The old bridge had seven openings with spans of around 50 m. The superstructures consisted of steel trusses with the construction form of the semi-parabolic girder, i.e. H. parabolic upper chords and end portals, as well as the roadway below.

The new bridge train from 1997 is designed for a maximum line speed of 160 km / h and has a continuous ballast bed. A steel arched bridge spans the shipping opening with a span of 80.0 m and a height of 13.3 m. In the river area there is a clear height of 6.26 m at the highest navigable water level.

In the foreland areas of the Elbe, the bridge consists of prestressed concrete superstructures that have the continuous girder as a structural system in the longitudinal direction. A single-cell reinforced concrete box with inclined webs, prestressed in the longitudinal direction , is available as a cross-sectional shape . The span of the four bridge fields on the left side of the Elbe are 16.3 m, 23.5 m, 30.5 m and 35.5 m, beginning at the Torgau abutment. The right-hand prestressed concrete superstructure with six fields has spans of 35.0 m, 31.0 m, 27.0 m, 24.0 m, 21.0 m and 18.1 m. The construction height of the prestressed concrete superstructure varies depending on the span between 1.55 m and 2.2 m, with a superstructure width of 8.64 m. The pillars have massive cross-sections and are founded flat within sheet piling boxes .
