history

Elbit Systems headquarters in Haifa

The company was founded in 1966 by Elron Electronic Industries. In the early days, the company focused on the development and production of navigation equipment for most Israeli aircraft, developed an avionics package for the IAI Lavi fighter aircraft and a fire control system for the Merkava tank . In 1996 Elbit was split into three independent companies: Elbit Medical Imaging, Elbit Systems and Elbit.

In 2000, Elbit Systems merged with El-Op, a company owned by current chairman Michael Federmann , to become the largest non-governmental defense electronics company in Israel. Due to the merger with El-Op, Michael Federmann is the company's largest shareholder. 2004 sold its shares in Elbit Elron for 200 million US dollars .

After the merger with El-Op, Michael Federmann and CEO Joseph Ackerman bought numerous companies:

  • Elisra (70% share)
  • Tadiran Communications
  • Shiron Satellite Communications
  • BVR Systems
  • Shares in the Aircraft Systems Division of Israel Military Industries
  • Innovative Concepts, Inc.
  • Mikal Ltd.

In 2004 Elbit bought the traditional high-frequency technology specialist Telefunken Racoms in Ulm. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Elbit Systems, Telefunken Racoms offers HF systems for the European market.

In November 2018, Elbit Systems announced the complete takeover of the formerly state armaments company IMI Systems . The acquisition was valued at around $ 495 million.

In April 2018, Elbit announced that it would open an office in Berlin to expand its activities on the German market.

Products

Elbit supplied the “UK Military Flight Training System” for British flight students (Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Army Air Corps) and the new equipment for soldiers called “Smart Vest” for the Benelux countries. The Hermes 900 drone was to be delivered to the Swiss Air Force as ADS 15 in 2019 as part of the “Unmanned Flight Systems” project.

The VHF communication and management system E-LynX is sold worldwide . The product family of digital military radios ( Software Defined Radios , SDR) is manufactured by Telefunken Radio Communication Systems GmbH & Co. KG, the German subsidiary of the Elbit Group. The E-LynX family is technically specified in such a way that it covers the entire VHF spectrum used by NATO on the receiving and transmitting side with 225 to 512 MHz. The PNR-1000 radio of the family should offer an ad-hoc network for 64 participants and automatically switch on as a relay for data and voice signals. The devices enable data, voice and video transmission at the same time and a real-time accurate position determination of one's own forces on the basis of the integrated ability " Blue Force Tracking ". A MultiHop method is intended to significantly increase the range and improve network agility and robustness with greatly reduced latency.

The E-LynX devices are used in the Bundeswehr on troop, group, platoon and company level, as well as on board various combat vehicles such as the PUMA AFV . The German army has equipped from 2019 forces with e-LynX PNR 1000 in portable and vehicle design. The Dutch armed forces, the Swiss armed forces and the Indian armed forces also use the devices.
