The Elbkaihaus

The Elbkaihaus is an office building in Hamburg-Altona-Altstadt .

Description and history

The building is located at Große Elbstraße 143-145 on the banks of the Norderelbe in the port of Hamburg, not far from Dockland .

The building used today as an office building was originally a fish cold store built in the 1960s, the upper floors of which were suspended from coverings that visually disappeared into the roof area. This construction was necessary because the water-side supports could only bear the weight of the semi-portal cranes .

The architects Gerkan, Marg and Partners created the plans for a renovation of the building . The renovation itself took place from 1998 to 1999. The existing coverings were exposed and worked into the new roof structures as end walls; the formwork-rough reinforced concrete columns inside the building were given a glazed coating. The loading platforms on the waterside were retained, but the building was given a new glass facade.
