Elda Neyis Mosquera

Elda Neyis Mosquera García (* approx. 1963), also known as Nelly Ávila Moreno or by her battle name Karina , was a member of the Colombian rebel organization FARC from 1988 to 2008 and became a leader.

She was the only woman in the FARC's leadership and commanded the Frente 47 combat unit . Karina's main area of ​​action extended mainly over the three provinces of Chocó , Antioquia and Caldas . She was injured many times and lost one eye.

During its 20th years of struggle it was the kidnapping , the murder and the uprising accused. The authorities charged their command with at least five massacres of civilians in the Urabá region in the 1990s, when the current President Uribe was governor . The state also attributed the murder of the father of the incumbent Colombian head of state Uribe to her.

She was given a $ 1 million bounty . After President Álvaro Uribe guaranteed her safety, negotiations were held for two weeks before she and her bodyguards surrendered to the authorities on May 19, 2008. It was murder, terrorism and kidnapping convicted and sentenced to 33 years in prison.

In a press conference she contradicted the accusation made against her that she had kidnapped and murdered the father of the incumbent President Álvaro Uribe in 1983. She has nothing to do with the matter and also has no knowledge of the real perpetrators. She was accused of doing many things she had nothing to do with and she was not the bloodthirsty person she was portrayed as. She had been tired of the war and the pressure of government troops on her unit had increased significantly recently. Another reason for their desertion was the government's rehabilitation program, which was offered to those who wanted to lay down their arms and change their lives. She also wanted to do something for peace. She called on her comrades to do the same. She was released on parole just a month after she was sentenced to 33 years in prison .
