Adansonia suarezensis is a species of baobab trees ( Adansonia ) in the mallow family (Malvaceae). It is similar to Adansonia digitata , but has upright, red flowers .

Vegetative characteristics

Adansonia suarezensis are large, massive, up to 25 meters high deciduous trees with gray-brown smooth bark , the trunks of which are up to 2 meters in diameter. Fully grown leaves are palmately divided with 7 to 9 partial leaves and sit on petioles up to 16 centimeters long . The bald leaf blade is oblong, 10.5 to 15.5 inches long and 3 to 6 inches wide. The leaf margin is entire.

Inflorescences and flowers

The individual flowers are upright. Their sepals are 7 inches long and 2 inches wide. The red, narrow obovate corolla is 7 to 8 inches long and 2 inches wide. The numerous stamens are fused into a 0.7 to 1.2 centimeter long tube with 6 to 7 centimeter long free tips.

The flowering period extends from late May to early July.

The elongated fruits , which ripen in November, are 20 to 25 centimeters long and up to 10 centimeters wide. They contain kidney-shaped, hardly laterally flattened seeds .

Adansonia suarezensis is endemic to the extreme north of Madagascar .
