Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale (born January 25, 1872 in London, † March 10, 1945 ) was an English painter and glass artist.

Life

Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale was born in the London borough of Upper Norwood in the Birchamp Villa . Her parents were Matthew Fortescue-Brickdale and Sarah Anna Fortescue-Brickdale, née Lloyd. Her father was a barrister . In 1894 he died in Biasca, Switzerland . Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale studied from 1889 at the Crystal Palace School of Art with Herbert Bone and later at the Royal Academy of Arts in London . There her style was shaped by Byam Shaw , who founded the Byam Shaw School of Art in 1911 , where she taught from the year it was founded.

In the early years of her work, she initially worked as a book illustrator , then switched to painting in the Pre-Raphaelite style and in later years also turned to glass painting . She had her own studio in London with The Studio and was a member of the Royal Watercolor Society . Works by her are u. a. found at the Ashmolean Museum or the Huntington's Library . One of her most famous works is the painting The Uninvited Guest and Guinevere (1906). After her death, she was buried in Brompton Cemetery , London .
