Eleanor Thornton

Eleanor Velasco Thornton (born April 15, 1880 in London as Nelly Thornton ; † December 30, 1915 in the Mediterranean ) was a British high society member and an art model . She was also known by her nickname "Thorn" (German: Dorn).

It stood as a model for the sculptor Charles Sykes and was the model for his Spirit of Ecstasy , the hood ornament for Rolls-Royce vehicles. She was the secretary and lover of the married British nobleman John Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu .

Thornton was killed on December 30, 1915 when the British passenger liner Persia was sunk . The ship was torpedoed in the eastern Mediterranean on its way to India by the German submarine U-38 under the command of Captain Max Valentiner without warning.
