Eleasar Lipa Sukenik (also: Elieser / Eliezer Lipa Sukenik ; born August 12, 1889 in Białystok , † February 28, 1953 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli archaeologist .

Career

Sukenik immigrated to Palestine in 1912. He graduated from Dropsie College (Philadelphia) in 1926 , and from 1927 he worked as an archaeologist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . From 1935 he was a lecturer, from 1938 professor and head of the antiquity museum of the university. The first Jewish excavations in the country took place under Sukenik's direction, during which ancient synagogues were excavated, for example in Bet Alpha , Hamat Gader or Salbit (the biblical Sha'albim ). Sukenik also took part in the excavations in Samaria .

Acquisition of the first Dead Sea Scrolls

After the discovery of the first seven Dead Sea Scrolls , Eleasar Lipa Sukenik was made aware of this discovery and contacted the antique dealer Faidi Salahi in Bethlehem, who had bought three of the scrolls from the Bedouin discoverers of the scrolls. On November 29, 1947 Sukenik visited the dealer and took two of the documents with him in order to study them more closely and to be able to decide on the purchase. The coincidental fact that the UN partition plan for the British mandate of Palestine was adopted by the UN General Assembly on this very day had symbolic significance for Sukenik. Ultimately, Sukenik bought up the three scrolls (1QM, 1QH a and 1Q Isaiah b [1Q8]). The remaining four ( 1QS , 1QpHab, 1QJesaja a and 1QapGen) could be examined but not acquired. They came into the possession of the Syrian metropolitan Athanasius Yeshue Samuel , who brought them to America in order to sell them there via newspaper advertisement. After Sukenik's death, his son Jigael Jadin finally succeeded in acquiring the roles for the State of Israel in 1954 . Sukenik was the first to establish a connection between the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Essenes .
