History and technical development

Electro-Voice Model 642 Long-Range Microphone (1961), one of the first shotgun microphones.

On September 1, 1927, Lou Burroughs and Al Kahn started a small radio business in South Bend, Indiana . As a result of the Great Depression , the two went bankrupt and owed $ 5,000. They decided to move their business to audio products. Electro-Voice's first product was a public address system that was delivered to soccer coach Knute Rockne. He coached the team from a tower and called the public address system electric voice . As a result, the company called itself Electro-Voice from June 1, 1930 .

Burroughs and Kahn recognized the poor quality at the high prices of the microphones common at the time. They started making microphones themselves and initially made one per week. Burroughs left the company and transferred it completely to Kahn. In 1933 the debts from the first business were paid off and Electro-Voice hired employees in production. In 1936 there were 20 people working in the company and Lou Burroughs returned as chief engineer. The principle of today as pickups for electric guitars and electric basses standard humbucker is in sound engineering as a humbucking coil (Engl. Humbucking coil ) known. The humbucking coil was invented by Electro-Voice in 1934. She used electro-voice in dynamic microphones .

The further development of the company was always accompanied by technical innovations. In 1957, Electro-Voice introduced the Stereo Magnetic Phono Cartridge . In 1963 the company received an Oscar of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , the first ever for an audio product for the development of the 642-Cardiline-Shotgun -Mikrofons. This microphone enabled a significant leap in the sound quality of cinema films. 1974 developed Electro-Voice constant directivity - horns , which allow an almost linear sound reproduction over the entire frequency range in any distance angles. In 1986 the company introduced manifold technology for concert halls. Manifold allows various loudspeaker drivers to be fed into one horn . In 1997 the ring-mode decoupling approach was introduced. The technology achieves a minimization of acoustic and mechanical resonances in the loudspeaker itself.

In February 1998, Electro-Voice was acquired by Telex Communications. Electro-Voice's headquarters were in Buchanan, Michigan until the merger. In 2000, Electro-Voice introduced ClearScan wireless technology in wireless audio connections, which includes an automatic search for free UHF channels. In June 2006, Electro-Voice, together with all other parts of Telex Communications, became a division of the Bosch Security Systems Division. Today it belongs to Bosch Communications Systems .

Market situation

Electro-Voice sells its products today (as of 2013) on all continents. In the field of semi-professional and professional sound reinforcement solutions, companies such as JBL Professional , HK Audio, Peavey u. a. Competitor. When it comes to recording technology, Electro-Voice is firmly established on the American market. Electro-Voice microphones are the traditional standard for US radio stations and TV stations.
