history

James Bullough Lansing founded JBL 1946, a year after his retirement from Altec Lansing , as Lansing Sound Inc . in Los Angeles . Since the name Lansing was already established as a product brand for many years, it quickly came to a dispute with Altec Lansing , ultimate change of name to James B. Lansing Sound, Inc . The first products were the D101 model , a 16-inch speaker, and the D175 high-frequency driver . The D175 remained in the range until the 1970s. Both models were replicas of the Altec Lansing products. The first standalone product was the D130 , a 15-inch converter that stayed in the range for the next 55 years. The D130 was equipped with a four-inch ribbon wire voice coil and Alnico- V magnet.

Lansing was more of a technician than a businessman, which brought his company into financial difficulties in the late 1940s and ultimately resulted in the company's founder's suicide . In 1949 William H. Thomas took over the company. He succeeded in reorganizing and promoting the company.

When the cinemas switched to stereo sound, JBL developed new loudspeakers for the movie theaters for the two manufacturers of cinema audio systems, Ampex and Westrex .

JBL D44000 Paragon

At the beginning of the 1950s, the development of high-quality audio reproduction in the home sector began. For this market, designer William Hartsfield developed a loudspeaker that was named after him. This speaker became a best seller and JBL became a major manufacturer of hi-fi home speakers.

In 1957 engineer Richard Ranger and designer Arnold Wolf developed the Paragon sound system. The Paragon, housed in an elegant wooden housing, was a first-class choice as a sound system as well as living room furniture and remained in the range for over 25 years.

In the 1950s, Leo Fender described the D130 loudspeaker as the ideal loudspeaker for his instruments.

With Capitol Records , JBL developed monitor boxes for recording studios in the early 1960s. The successful 4320 system laid the foundation for the independent department of professional audio technology, which has been developing playback systems for studios to this day. In addition, were Hifi amplifier manufactured; In 1966 the JBL SA-600 was put into circulation.

JBL has been part of today's Harman International Group, which also includes Harman / Kardon and Infinity , since 1969 .
