The Electro-Voice RE20 is a dynamic large-diaphragm microphone . It has been one of the most popular microphones on American radio stations since its introduction in 1968.

The RE-20 uses the “Variable D” design patented by Electro-Voice in 1953 to be able to control the close-up effects . This makes it possible to use the microphone very close to the sound source and still produce a clear sound. A high-pass filter (" bass tilt-down switch ") can be switched on using a switch on the housing , which causes an attenuation of approximately 2.25 dB / octave below 400 Hz. In contrast to the new "Broadcast Dynamics" from EV, the RE27N / D and RE320, the output signal of the RE20 is decoupled with a transformer.

The microphone (popular designation: “donkey dick” or “elephant penis”) is used not only for speaking voices but also for bass drums or amp recording, as it can cope well with high pressure. It is often used in the same way as the Sennheiser MD 421 .

The RE20 has typical characteristics of dynamic microphones: an impedance of 150 ohms and an output voltage of 1.5 mV / Pascal.
