The Electromecanica Ploieşti (short: Electromecanica) is a Romanian arms company based in the city of Ploieşti . It is a subsidiary of the state-owned arms company ROMARM .

Company history

The beginnings of Electromecanica Ploieşti go back to 1955, when a repair workshop for the Romanian anti-aircraft artillery and a military school were founded in Ploieşti . With Decree CS No. 76 of April 6, 1981, the government decreed that Electromecanica was exclusively entrusted with the repair of missile technology that was in use by the Romanian armed forces. Furthermore, in the 1980s there was a massive expansion of the plant in Ploieşti and, in addition to missile maintenance, the production of missiles developed by the Soviet Union began . The company had the state monopoly for the manufacture of rockets. The first models were the A-90 ( RS-2US ), A-91 ( R-3S ) and A-921 ( Ch-23M "GROM" ) missiles . After the fall of communism in Romania , it was expanded to include a civil sector. Since then, the construction of hail defense systems has been carried out in cooperation with the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture. In 2001, Electromecanica was taken over by ROMARM and specializes in the manufacture and maintenance of military and civil missiles. Romarm originally held 100% of the company, which was reduced to a stake of 82%, with the remaining 18% being transferred to the Authority for the Realization of State Assets (AVAS). Electromecanica Ploieşti also has a stake in the Romanian telecommunications supplier Elettra Communications SA. On August 24, 2017, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between MBDA and Electromecanica in order to initiate the joint development and production of modern missile systems for the Romanian armed forces.
