The “Auf den Kämpen” power station on Mühlengraben in Arnsberg is a technical monument.

history

The mill ditch in Arnsberg was created in the Middle Ages to use the hydropower of the Ruhr . It branches off from the river at Eichholz and flows parallel to it for about 3.5 km. Behind the former Sauerland paper mill it flows back to the Ruhr. If in earlier times it served as the driving force for mills, the water was later also used to generate electrical energy .

In the middle of the mill ditch, the power station was built in 1910/1911 to supply the paper mill. It was built by the royal master builder Gustav Tilmann, who was also a co-owner of the plant. After the Second World War, the plant also contributed to the city's electricity supply. As of 2015, the plant will be used to generate electricity. In 2009 the building was a Monument of the Month of the Working Group on Historic Town Centers in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Building description

The building is of interest not only in terms of technology, but also in terms of architecture. Thereby technical function and regionally connected construction form a connection. The ground floor with the generator room was built in reinforced concrete in the neo-renaissance style. The storey is structured by large segment windows with iron bars. The residential floor above was designed as a half-timbered building . The windows are smaller and have wooden bars. The triangular gable on the southern and northern sides of the facade is striking.
