The Baku – Sabuntschi – Surachany electric train series is a series of electric trains that were built and operated by the railways of the Soviet Union from 1926 onwards. They are considered to be the first electric railcars used in suburban traffic in the former Soviet Union. The vehicles were used on the first electrified line in the country Baku  - Sabunçu  - Suraxanı (Russian: Baku - Sabuntschi - Surachany ) until 1940 and were replaced there by class C Д railcars after they were retired .

history

The Baku - Sabuntschi railway with a branch to Surachany had a total length of 19 kilometers in 1926 and connected Baku with the oil production areas in its eastern suburbs. The line was opened in 1880 as the first railway line in what would later become Azerbaijan . In 1924 there were still 12 pairs of suburban trains running daily with steam traction and a cycle time of 1.5 to 2 hours. The average cruising speed for these connections was 16 km / h.

The population growth and industrial development of Baku required the improvement of local transport in the region. After a few test runs, the Baku Board of Directors recommended electrification of the railroad. In 1924, on his behalf, work began on the electrification of the Baku - Sabunçu - Suraxanı railway line. An electrical power supply with direct current and a voltage of 1200 V was used on the route . The electric trains for the first electrified railway line in the Soviet Union were built in the Mytishchi wagon factory in 1926 . They were manufactured on the basis of the factory's series-produced trams . The railway received the first carriages in April 1926, after the construction test runs were only carried out with a voltage of 600 V, and from May 13, 1926, the first journeys from Baku to Sabunçu began with a voltage of 1200 V. After the test was finished first trained the company's staff. The sidecar (13 for passenger traffic and one for combined mail / luggage transport) was produced by the Bryansk locomotive factory , which at that time was called Красный Профинтерн ( Krasny Profintern for " Red Profintern "). Electric operation was officially started on July 6, 1926. After the introduction of direct current operation, the traffic density increased 2.5 times, the average speed was then 28.5 km / h. First the electrical connection was established between the Baku and Sabunçu stations, later from Sabunçu to Suraxanı, from April 1933 between the Sabunçu and Zabrat stations (in Russian Sabrat, Забрат ) and from 1940 to the Buzovna station (in Russian Busowny, Бузовны ).

In April 1940, the suburban lines around Baku, including Baku - Sabunçu - Suraxanı, were subordinated to the People's Commissariat for Railway Affairs (NKPS) of the Soviet Union and incorporated into the Transcaucasian Railway . Insufficient experience with the operation and insufficient repair technologies had led to considerable wear and tear on the vehicles on the first electrified railway line in the Soviet Union. Therefore, the electric train park was renewed by vehicles of the C Д series until 1940 and the trains originally used were retired.

Technical characteristics

There are almost no technical descriptions of the vehicles in the literature. Only the following technical data can be found;

  • they had electric traction motors of the type ДБ-2 ( DB-2 ),
  • the traction motors had an hourly output of 75 kW each,
  • the wheel diameter was 1,050 mm,
  • the transmission ratio of the drive was 65:21,
  • the mass of the motor vehicle without passengers was 38.5 t,
