Elena Makarova (educational scientist)

Elena Makarova (* 1971 in Kiev , USSR ) is a Swiss educationalist , holder of the professorship for educational sciences and director of the institute for educational sciences at the University of Basel .

Professional background

She studied special education and speech therapy at the Pedagogical University in Kiev in the former USSR. After migrating to Switzerland, she attended the University of Bern studies in education, Slavic and Russian philology and in 2007 Human Sciences Philosophy and at the Faculty of the University of Bern doctorate. During her studies and doctoral studies, she worked at various secondary schools as a teacher of Russian and pedagogy. Between 2003 and 2015 she was an assistant and senior assistant at the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Bern and did research as an SNSF visiting scholar at the Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Illinois at Chicago . After completing her habilitation in educational science in 2014, she was professor for school pedagogy for two years, with a special focus on social, cultural and linguistic diversity at the University of Vienna . In 2019 she was elected full professor for educational sciences at the University of Basel.
