Elena Souliotis , also Elena Suliotis ( Greek Έλενα Σουλιώτη ; born May 28, 1943 in Athens , † December 4, 2004 in Florence ) was a Greek opera singer (soprano).

Life

When she was two years old, she suffered meningitis and was subsequently hard of hearing in one ear. When she was five years old, her parents emigrated to Buenos Aires - her mother was Greek, her father Russian . She received her vocal training there from Alfredo Bontà , Jascha Galperin and Bianca Lietti . In 1962 she went to Milan as a student of Mercedes Llopart .

In 1964 Souliotis made his debut in Naples as Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana , followed by engagements at the big houses, such as in 1966 at La Scala in Milan as Abigaille in Nabucco or New York with Donizetti's Anna Bolena . She was considered The Next Callas , but the success didn't last. She then tried a second career as a mezzo-soprano, which, however, no longer achieved the success of the beginning.

She married in the mid 1970s. The marriage from which their daughter Barbara was born ended in divorce.

Souliotis was known for her lyrical-dramatic voice with remarkable individuality and her attention-grabbing stage presence. She was last seen and heard in Stuttgart in 2000 as the Old Countess in Peter Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades .
