Eleonora Francini Corti

Eleonora Francini Corti (born July 14, 1904 in Florence , † February 14, 1984 in Florence) was an Italian botanist .

Career

Eleonora Francini was the daughter of Enrico Francini and Vittoria Marinai. After attending high school, studied science at the University of Florence . She showed particular interest in the teachings of Giovanni Negri and Enrico Carano. Eleonora Francini completed her studies in 1926 with a diploma. She then worked at the Botanical Institute of the Florence University . After her habilitation in Florence in 1932, she moved to the Botanical Institute of the University of Pisa as an assistant . In 1939 she went to the University of Bari . She initially taught there in the agricultural department, but later switched to the natural sciences. In 1952 she married Roberto Corti , professor at the University of Florence. In 1962 Francini was appointed professor at the University of Florence. There she held the position of director of the Erbario dell'Africa tropicale and the Center for Electron Microscopy .

Act

Eleonora Francini founded the Botanical Institute and the Botanical Garden at the University of Bari .

The focus of her research area was on the embryology of plants. She paid particular attention to the ultrastructure of gametophytes , gymnosperms and angiosperms . She mostly used Mediterranean plants for her research. She also dealt with systematic anatomy and geobotanical issues.

Francini was editor of the internationally oriented journal Caryologia from 1962 to 1979 .

Appreciation

In October 1955 she was elected a corresponding member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei , in October 1971 she became socio nazionale (full member). She has also been elected a member of the International Society of Plant Morphologs .
