Eleutherna ( Greek  Ἐλευθέρνα, modern Greek transcription Eleftherna , also plural form Eleuthernai ) was an ancient Greek city on the island of Crete . It was located on the northwestern slope of the Ida Mountains near today's village of Eleftherna near the Arkadi monastery .

The city was supposedly founded by the Curetes ; Settlement has been archaeologically proven since the late Minoan period. Some events have come down to us from the story of Eleuthernas in Hellenistic times. 67 BC It was conquered by Quintus Caecilius Metellus Creticus . In late antiquity, Eleutherna was the seat of a bishop. In the middle of the 5th century under Bishop Euphratas, a basilica was built that is one of the oldest in Crete. The titular Eleutherna of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to the diocese . The archaeological remains of the city were last researched by Petros Themelis .

An ancient cantilever bridge has been preserved near the town, see Eleutherna Bridge .
