Petros Themelis

Petros G. Themelis (Πέτρος Θέμελης, * 1936 in Thessaloniki ) is a Greek classical archaeologist .

Life

Petros Themelis is the son of the poet George Themelis. He studied Classical Archeology and Classical Philology at the University of Thessaloniki from 1955 and 1959 . From 1960 to 1962 he did his military service and then became a research assistant at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki . During this time he took part in excavations in Thessaloniki, Pella , Lefkandi on Euboea , in Stratoni on Chalkidiki and at the palace in Verginia . From 1963 to 1969 he worked in the position of epimelet of the archaeological service in Olympia , Attica and on Evia. Themelis received her doctorate in 1972 with the work Early Greek Grave Buildings . A year later he became "Ephoros" of the antiquities in the regions of Phocis , West Lokris and Aetolia / Acarnania . In 1980 he moved to the newly created director's post for paleoanthropology and speleology .

In 1984 Themelis became professor at the University of Crete based in Rethymnon . He led the extensive excavations and restoration work in ancient Messene and also carried out excavations in Eleutherna on Crete . He is the chairman of the Society for Messenian Studies and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and the Austrian Archaeological Institute .
