Elexis ( ele ktronische Pra xis ) is a free medical office software based on the Eclipse Rich Client Platform, which previously mainly in Switzerland and occasionally in Austria is used. The plug-in technology adopted by Eclipse enables configurability and adaptation to different needs (different types of practice, different accounting systems, etc.). OpenOffice.org is integrated as a text system within the program . The main repository is on Sourceforge.net; preconfigured installation packages for Windows , Linux and macOS are provided on the project page. Elexis is licensed under the Eclipse Public License (EPL).

The program was initiated in 2005 by a doctor from Schaffhausen and is promoted and developed by a group of doctors in Switzerland and Austria.

Range of functions

Elexis maps the entire process of a doctor's office. This begins with the recording of personal details and insurance connections and also includes:

  • the patient record, i.e. an overview of the patient's life data, diagnoses and treatments; Documentation of measured values and therapy plans as well as free notes from the doctor
  • Time and task planning of the doctor with agenda, waiting room info, task list
  • automatic collection of laboratory results via encrypted internet connection and notification of new laboratory values that have arrived
  • Assisted creation and transmission of reports, certificates and prescriptions
  • Invoicing and complete accounting according to Swiss, partly Austrian legislation
  • Statistics on services provided
  • Pharmacy warehouse management

User group

The software is primarily developed for medical practices. Important developments are communication tools for large practices, network tools for managed care organizations and plugins for distributed medical research projects, such as B. FIRE. Plugins for the needs of other service industries (e.g. lawyers, veterinarians, craftsmen) are discussed.

Localization

Translations are planned initially into the Swiss national languages French and Italian, later possibly also into English. The French version is currently being tested.

Significance within eHealth

Naturally, eHealth applications are generally only of interest to a relatively small group of users. Today Elexis is one of the five most important electronic medical records in Switzerland and is the only fully functional open source program in this segment. Since July 1, 2007, more than 4000 downloads have been counted. Elexis was mentioned in Eclipse magazine 10, where it was named as a major development in the OHF environment. Articles appeared in various medical magazines.

In 2008, the Aargau doctors' association argomed carried out a pilot project to introduce electronic medical records in medical practices; Elexis was used.

Related projects

  • GNUmed - German open source project based on Postgresql / Python, no accounting module (GPL)
  • FreeMed - English language project without accounting module
  • ClearHealth - extensive web-based EMR without practice management tools (GPL).

User support

Because of the high level of dependency of the doctor's practice on the smooth functioning of the software and because not all doctors have IT expertise, a professional support network is being set up. For this, independent service providers are licensed and technically supported in different regions. A help and self-help forum is also operated.
