Stumbling blocks in Wels in memory of Elfriede Grünberg and her mother and aunt

Elfriede Grünberg (born April 1, 1929 in Wels ; died June 15, 1942 in the Maly Trostinez extermination camp ) was a young victim of National Socialism .

Life

Elfriede Grünberg was the youngest of the five children of Max and Ernestine Grünberg, who immigrated from Romania to Austria in 1920 . The family was of Jewish faith and belonged to the Linz religious community . Since there is no synagogue in Wels , the devout Wels Jews had to orient themselves either to Linz or to Steyr .

In 1936 the family moved to Pernau, where they found shelter with friends. Two years later, Elfriede's father Max had to move to Vienna , from where he emigrated to Shanghai in 1939 . Probably Elfriede and the rest of the family were taken in 1941 to Vienna, where Jews from all over Austria rounded up for later in the various concentration camps to deport . On June 9, 1942, Elfriede Grünberg and her mother were deported from Vienna to the Maly Trostinez extermination camp. On June 15 of the same year, Elfriede was most likely killed in a gas truck .

Commemoration

In memory of her, the Elfriede Grünberg Prize was donated, which has been awarded by the Wels Initiative against Fascism since 2000 . On August 14, 2008, three stumbling blocks by the artist Gunter Demnig were laid in Wels , reminding of the fate of Elfriede Grünberg, her mother and her aunt.
