Elia System Operator SA is a listed Belgian transmission system operator based in Brussels . The company owns and operates the entire Belgian high voltage electrical network . The company was created on June 28, 2001 through the merger of CPTE with the subsidiary of Electrabel , which was responsible for the high-voltage network in the 30 to 380  kV range . From March 2012 to March 2017 Elia was a member of the BEL 20 share index .

Germany

On March 12, 2010, Elia bought 60% of 50Hertz Transmission , until then a subsidiary of Vattenfall Europe ; the remaining 40% went to the Australian fund IFM Investors . The Dutch Tennet Holding had previously taken over E.ON's network share .

In March 2018 it was announced that IFM would like to sell 20% of its shares in 50Hertz Transmission. Elia bought these shares and from now on holds 80% of 50Hertz.

With the ALEGrO project , the company is planning and building an underground cable connection from Germany to Belgium in cooperation with the German transmission system operator Amprion .
