Tennet Holding BV (own spelling TenneT ) is a Dutch electricity network operator founded in 1998 with headquarters in Arnhem and owned by the Dutch Ministry of Finance. In 2019, the subsidiary TenneT TSO BV operates an electricity network in the Netherlands consisting of 10,697 km of overhead lines and underground cables as well as 332 substations .

The subsidiary Tennet TSO GmbH operates a high and extra high voltage network in Germany with a total length of around 12,980 kilometers (overhead line: 10,804 km; underground cable: 2,176 km) and 130 substations.

Company history

TenneT headquarters in Arnhem

Between 1900 and 1920, many regional administrative authorities took power in the Netherlands into their own hands. Some authorities were only responsible for transport, while others were also responsible for production. Until the 1980s, the energy supply in the Netherlands was ensured by municipal utilities . A series of mergers over the years created several regional energy supply companies , which also gradually merged.

In 1949, the regional supply companies merged to form the Samenwerkende elektriciteits-produktiebedrijven (SEP) in order to bundle energy generation and the management of the transmission networks. At the beginning, the main focus was on building a supra-regional safety network in order to be able to guarantee the supply of electricity even if a power plant failed. In the field of transmission networks, the SEP was the forerunner of today's Tennet.

Tennet was founded in 1998. The then new Electricity Act designated Tennet as the independent administrator of the Dutch high-voltage network. The company should ensure the effective and reliable energy supply in the Netherlands.

In December 2003, Tennet completed the takeover of the electricity network operator Transportnet Zuid Holland (TZH), which operated the 150 kV lines in South Holland . With this acquisition, Tennet took the first step in operating all Dutch transmission networks.

Tennet TSO in Germany

On January 1, 2010, TenneT bought E.ON's German extra-high voltage network, which until October 5, 2010 was called Transpower Strom Transmission GmbH . E.ON thus fulfilled an obligation towards the European Commission to sell it by December 1, 2010 to an investor who had previously had no interests in electricity generation and / or supply. The EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes had demanded this due to the dominant position of the E.ON Group in antitrust proceedings that were discontinued through the sale to the Dutch electricity network operator. The company operating under the name Tennet TSO is based in Bayreuth .
