Eliahu Winograd (2013)

Eliahu Winograd ( Hebrew אליהו וינוגרד; * December 1926 in Tel Aviv , Palestine ; † January 13, 2018 ) was an Israeli lawyer, judge of the Israeli Supreme Court and Vice President of the Tel Aviv District Court. He was chairman of several investigative commissions , from September 17, 2006 to January 2008, he headed the Winograd commission named after him .

Life

Winograd finished school in Jerusalem in 1945 and did military service between 1948 and 1950. In 1952 he graduated from the Tel Aviv College of Law and Economics (later became part of Tel Aviv University ) and received his bar title from there .

Career

After graduation, he found employment as a legal assistant in an office called "Lishor Hahar & Co" and stayed there until 1960. From 1960 to 1963 he was a paralegal at the Tel Aviv District Court. He then worked as a freelance lawyer until he was appointed judge at the Tel Aviv District Court in 1972 . He was later appointed Vice President of the Tel Aviv District Court. Winograd received his doctorate degree in law in 1983 from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem . He served as a judge in the Israeli Supreme Court for a year before retiring as a judge in 1996. Since then, Winograd has worked as an arbitrator and mediator, dealt with town law and chaired a number of public inquiry committees.

Public committee of inquiry in 2000 on university tuition fees in Israel, at the end of which it was recommended that fees be reduced by 50%. Since the investigation was completed, fees have increased and student demonstrations have taken place several times.
