At the age of 19 Elisabeth emigrated with her family (father Harman van der Woude, brother, sister) and 50 servants to the Dutch colony in what is now French Guiana . Father and sister died when they crossed the Atlantic, and many of the service workers in their new home, although they found good land and friends with the locals.
