Elizabeth Akua Ohene

Elizabeth Akua Ohene (also: Elizabeth Ekua Ohene) (born January 24, 1945 , Ho , Ghana ) is a leading journalist, columnist, editor and politician in Ghana. During the reign of President John Agyekum Kufuor , she had been entrusted with various ministerial posts. Ohene is the acting Minister for Education. Previously, she was Minister of State in the President's Office.

Ohene attended Mawuli School in Ho between 1958 and 1964 . After graduating, she attended the University of Ghana in Legon, a district of Accra . She completed her studies with a BA (Hon) in English in 1967. Ohene later attended the University of Indiana, Bloomington, USA to study communication science. She earned a certificate in mass communication.

The US State Department funded Ohene in 1971 a practical course in communication studies that took her to various newspapers in three states of the United States.

Career

Between 1967 and 1982 Ohene worked as a reporter, columnist and editor for the Daily Graphic and the Mirror. She also served on the board of directors for Graphic Corporation, the publishers of the Daily Graphiy and Mirror newspapers.

In 1986 she founded Talking Drum Publications , a weekly magazine for West Africa, of which she was editor and publisher until 1986. Ohene worked for the BBC in the World Service department in London, Great Britain. She also worked for the BBC as a radio producer. Over the course of her career, she has become a radio presenter, producer for the BBC's World Service and British Domestic Radio, columnist for African Magazin and vice-editor of the English Daily Programs responsible for the budget.

Ohene was the BBC's correspondent in various parts of Africa, and between 1993 and 1994 she was a dedicated correspondent for South Africa. Ohene has developed and directed various training programs for journalists in South Africa, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia for the BBC. She is a member of the International Women Media Foundation, which actively supports the entry of women into the media industry and imparts skills for entry into management positions in the media sector. The foundation has set up a media center for women in Dakar, Senegal ( Africa Women's Media Center ). This center holds training courses for women from all over Africa to develop their journalistic skills. Ohene has been a member of the CNN Africa Journalist of the Jear competition since 1997 .

When Kufuor took office in Osu Castle in 2001, Ohene became Minister of State in the President's Office with responsibility for media and President's spokesperson. Since 2001 she has been Minister of State with no office in the President's office and government spokeswoman.

Ohene was a reporter at the 2006 Football World Cup in Germany and published her impressions in THE GHANAIAN TIMES , Accra.
