The Elk Lakes Provincial Park is approximately 17,245 hectares large Provincial Park in the southeast of the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is located about 104 kilometers north of Sparwood on the continental divide , in the Regional District of East Kootenay in the Canadian Rockies .

history
The park was established in 1973. Over time, both its size and its protection status have changed. When it was founded, it had a size of about 13,000 ac , which corresponds to around 5261 hectares. Its borders were last changed in 1995 and it grew to 17,245 ha.
Flora and fauna
British Columbia's ecosystem is divided into different biogeoclimatic zones using the Biogeoclimatic Ecological Classification (BEC) Zoning System . Biogeoclimatic zones are characterized by a fundamentally identical or very similar climate and the same or very similar biological and geological conditions. This results in a very similar population of plants and animals in the respective zones. Within this system, the park is assigned to the adjacent Height of the Rockies Provincial Park , the Spruce Subalpine Fir Zone as well as the Alpine Tundra Zone and the Montane Spruce Zone .

The park is particularly used by hikers and mountaineers. It is popular with hikers because it is on the Trans Canada Trail .

The closest Provincial Park in British Columbia is the Height of the Rockies Provincial Park, immediately adjacent to the west. To the north, the park borders the province of Alberta . This is where the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park immediately follows .
