history

The label "elk" originally comes from the elementary teacher conference of the Canton of Zurich, abbreviated ELK. That was the teachers' association of lower-level teachers of the Canton of Zurich, organized as a non-commercial, tax-exempt association. The ELK, founded in 1925, published its own yearbooks and teaching aids in its first few years. A booklet created by the founding president Ernst Bleuler was allowed to be used in lessons from 1935 with the consent of the Education Directorate . In 1948 the publisher of the Elementary Teachers Conference published the work "Roti Rösli im Garte" by Dr. Hugelshofer. In 1990 the ELK set up a workshop exchange under the direction of Walti Bräm. Even today, long-established Zurich teachers sometimes remember the hand-knitted “blue pencil case” with a loving smile. The growing deficit of the stock exchange, however, increasingly burdened the association's budget and prompted the then board of directors to realign the entire “publishing sector”. In a first step, an external business consultant was called in, who separated the publishing division from the association and restructured it in terms of accounting. In a second step, an experienced publishing specialist was commissioned to put the publishing area on a professional basis and to run it into an independent, economic operation.

This is where the real history of elk Verlag AG begins, with the establishment of the stock corporation on January 1st, 2002. A great success story. What has remained after the complete separation from the old ELK is the label "elk", pronounced like the elk in English. It all started in Fehraltorf with a small team in a kind of farmhouse parlor with a large garage. The publisher has quickly developed into a well-known and established brand throughout Switzerland. In 2015, the publishing house is an established company in its own publishing building in Winterthur- Töss , with fourteen employees and a seven-person, permanent, professional editorial team. With its well-known and characteristic range of products, it is hard to imagine Switzerland without the publisher in the range of the larger, important teaching material publishers.

The majority of the publishing house has belonged to the Klett Group since January 1, 2017 .
