Elliniki Omospondia Chokei
Elliniki Omospondia Chokei ( Greek ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΟΜΟΣΠΟΝΔΙΑ ΧΟΚΕΫ , short ΕΛΟΧ or ELOH German Greek Hockey Association ) is the national sports association for hockey in Greece and was founded in Athens in 1994 .
The association has 29 associations and has around 3000 registered members (as of January 1, 2009) . The EL.OH is a member of the World Hockey Association FIH ( International Hockey Federation ) and in the European Hockey Federation EHF ( European Hockey Federation ). The association is responsible for the Greek national hockey teams.
Hockey in Greece
Antiquity
A type of hockey was played in Greece as early as around 500 BC. The ancient Greeks called this sport Keretizein ( Greek Κερητίζειν ).
Little is known about the rules of this game. Historians suspect that curved sticks served as bats, which were called Κέρας (German: horn) and that a wooden ball served as a ball. In the National Museum of Athens there is a relief that shows the ancient Greeks playing this game.
Modern times
It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that the modern form of hockey established itself in Greece. In 1924 the Athens tennis club Αντισφαίρισης Αθηνών (Antisferisi Athens) set up the first department for hockey in their club and thus founded the first organized hockey club in Greece. The first tournaments were held between 1927 and 1937, mostly on football fields between newly founded, non-professionally organized clubs. After the Second World War, the first teams were formed again, mostly at universities that pursued this sport. From 1974 a non-organized national team of Greece was formed in hockey which could only prove itself in friendly games. It was not until 1994, when further professional clubs were founded, that the Greek Hockey Association was brought into being. In the same year the first official Greek championship was held by an umbrella organization . The Greek Hockey Federation also joined the FIH , and a year later (1995) also the EHF .
