The Ellis & Burnand Tramway was from 1922 to 1958 a 37-km long narrow gauge - forest railway with wooden rails partly at Ongarue in New Zealand with a track width of 1067 mm (3 foot 6 inches ).
route
Construction of the railway began in 1922 after JW Ellis and Harry Burnand built their sawmill in Ongarue in 1914.
The Ellis & Burnand Tramway was a Ongarue spiral -called circuit terminal loop , a circular loop tunnel , two high Trestle professionally planned and built bridges and deep cuts. It was the longest forest railway in the New Zealand bush.
In 1955 the forest railway was shut down due to flood damage, and in 1966 the sawmill was also decommissioned.
Locomotives
Steam-powered geared locomotives from Climax , Heisler / Stearns and Price were used on the Waldbahn. The Climax locomotive drove back and forth between the sawmill and the siding at Waione Camp, while the A. & G. Price locomotives drove from there to the loading points in the forest.
