Elmar Mayer (born March 13, 1953 in Hohenems ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and teacher . Mayer was a member of the Austrian National Council from 2006 to 2017 and a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament from 1983 to 2006 .

education and profession

Elmar Mayer attended elementary school in Götzis from 1959 to 1963 and the grammar school in Feldkirch from 1964 to 1968 . He then moved to the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium in Feldkirch, where he passed the Matura in 1973. From 1973 to 1975 he graduated from the Pedagogical Academy in Feldkirch. Mayer worked from 1975 to 1994 as a primary school teacher and from 1994 to 2006 as primary school director.

politics

Mayer was regional chairman of the Socialist Youth Vorarlberg between 1976 and 1980 and local councilor in Götzis from 1980 to 1995. He came in 1983 as a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament and was there from 1989 to 1992 club chairman of the SPÖ. On October 30, 2006, Mayer moved from the state parliament to the national council. In addition, Mayer was state chairman of the SPÖ Vorarlberg between 1995 and 1999 .

According to his own statements, the main focuses of his political activities are education, science, security, housing, control and Europe. Until December 13, 2013, Mayer was the SPÖ's education spokesman in the National Council for five years before he declared that he would resign from this position due to the fact that some of his central educational policy demands were not included in the new coalition agreement of the federal government, Faymann II, presented on the same day .
