Elmer is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the moon's front . Because of this location, the area is only visible in a strongly distorted manner, if at all. The crater is south of Mare Smythii , southeast of Kästner crater and northeast of Ansgarius . It is bowl-shaped and moderately eroded.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1976 after the American astronomer Charles Wesley Elmer .
