Elphège Vacandard

Elphège Vacandard (born April 10, 1849 in Melleville, Seine-Maritime department , † October 23, 1927 in Rouen ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman, theologian and church historian.

life and work

Vacandard was ordained a priest in 1873 and taught religion at the Lycée Corneille in Rouen from 1877 until his death . In 1881 he received his doctorate from the University of Rouen with a theological thesis on Petrus Abelardus . Among other things, he dealt with the history of the Inquisition . His masterpiece is the biography in two volumes of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1895), which was very soon translated into German and, because of its text-critical method, is still felt to be fundamental today.
