Elrio van Heerden (born July 11, 1983 in Port Elizabeth ) is a former South African football player .

Career

Youth and amateur football

Van Heerden began his career as an active football player with Glenville Celtic FC , an amateur club from Port Elizabeth. He later moved to the University of Port Elizabeth , where the Soccer School of Excellence , a kind of youth academy of FC Copenhagen , was located.

Club career

In 2002 he moved to Denmark , where he initially only played with the amateurs of FC Copenhagen and later trained with the club's first fighting team. On May 23, 2004 he made his professional debut in a game against Aalborg BK in the Parken Stadium , in which he scored his first goal in professional football shortly before the end of the game. With the goal van Heerden went down in history as the club secured the championship title after the 4-2 away win in the following round over FC Nordsjælland . By the time he left, van Heerden had played 25 games and scored five goals.

On January 24, 2006, he signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Belgian club Bruges and came on February 19, just under a month after joining the team, for his first appearance in the top division of Belgian football, the Jupiler League .

On June 2, 2009 it was announced that van Heerden has signed a two-year contract with the English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers . On 11 January 2010 van Heerden was after two brief appearances in the League Cup in Turkey to Sivasspor awarded where his loan period ran until the summer.

After being loaned, a short time later he switched permanently to KVC Westerlo for a year . In 2011 he joined the Golden Arrows in his native South Africa and ended his active career after the season.

International

From 2004 to 2009 van Heerden was in the squad of the South African national team. His debut took place on June 5, 2004 in a World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde . In 2005 he took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the national team. His participation in the African Championships in 2006 and 2008 each ended with the end in the preliminary round. In May 2009 he was appointed to the provisional squad for the Confederations Cup .
