Els (herbal bitter)
The Els is a vermouth-heavy Kräuterbitter or herbal liquor that is not burned. It is best known from the Monschau area in the Eifel , but it also has a tradition in the Lower Rhine region and in the neighboring Netherlands .
It can be produced in two ways: as a “ top-on ” in the private sector or commercially by producing and mixing a distillate. The product is traditionally available in almost all of Monschau's pubs and in the surrounding area.
The origins could be in Reichenstein Monastery . Originally it is said to have been a tea (herbs mixed in water) for cattle, for cows with an appetite. According to the motto: what helps the cattle is also good for the people , the Els was made with the same ingredients, but based on alcohol.
Els is not a protected, localized name, so it is also used here, for example:
- Kalterherberger Els
- Monschauer Els
- Raerener Els
- Vossenacker Els
- Xantener Els
- Kevelaerer Moosbur Els
In Beek / Limburg , Netherlands will Ael (brand name: Els la Vera) produced; The Tilburg herbal schnapps is similar .
