Location and development
The 6,171 m² square is bordered in the north by Lutterothstrasse, in the east by Methfesselstrasse, in the south by Hartwig-Hesse-Strasse and in the west by Stellinger Weg and is embedded in a small park. It has a north-south extension of 100 meters with a width of 100 meters in the north and only 50 meters in the south. It rises from Methfesselstraße to the west by around 2 meters. There are islands with play equipment on the paved square. On its east side there is an entrance to the Lutterothstraße subway station of the Hamburg subway .
history
During the Second World War , a bunker was built under the square to protect against aircraft attacks. At that time, access was gained from the Lutterothstrasse and Hartwig-Hesse-Strasse schools. This bunker is connected underground via a tunnel system with two other bunkers, one with the school bunker on Telemannstrasse and the other with the bunker on Osterstrasse. After the Second World War this was shut down.
In 1967 the operation of the tram line 16 was stopped, so the function of the turning area on the Else-Rauch-Platz, which at that time was still called Methfesselplatz , ceased to exist . The name was changed in 1995 after Else Rauch , a Hamburg teacher of Jewish origin who was murdered on May 10, 1942 in the Kulmhof extermination camp . The official inauguration of the square took place on July 14, 2000.
Events
Since October 3, 2000 there has been a flea market for private traders every last Sunday of the month. Once a year in August there is the three-day Methfessel Festival on the square. In addition to information about the district and the world, you can also be inspired by readings, puppet shows, panel discussions, live music and a film festival. This is one of the few "non-commercial" district festivals in Hamburg. All profits are donated to a charitable cause and the organizations are volunteers. In September there is an “XXL flea market” in association with the Osterstraße eV association.
