Elysium Mons is the largest volcano in the Elysium Planitia region on the planet Mars . It was discovered in 1972 while the Mariner 9 spacecraft passed by .

Elysium Mons rises 12.5 km above the area and has an extension of 500 × 700 km at the base. Its summit caldera is 14.1 km in diameter.

It differs from the large volcanoes of the Tharsis region in that no major lava flows are visible on its flanks . Several craters are visible in its vicinity, but they are not caused by meteorite impacts , but are of volcanic origin.
