Embrichons

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Embricho was a common first name among Kurmainzische ministerials in the Rheingau in the 11th and 12th centuries, who held the title of Count in the Rheingau , as well as among the noble-free Rhine Counts who were non- agnatically descended from them until the 13th century. Members of these lines can therefore be summarized as embryos . Four agnatic lines can be distinguished: the Counts in the Rheingau, the Ministeriales from Heppenheft, the Rheingrafen and the Rheingrafen vom Stein. It is an extraordinary phenomenon that the counts in the Rheingau, as ministerials , bore the title of Count . It is not known when part of the embryos were released from the ministerial office. Residences were Castle Johannisberg , castle Heppe booklet (from 1122), Castle Rheinberg (from 1165) and most recently Castle Rheingrafenstein (no later than the 13th century). After the Rheingrafen vom Stein joined a feud between the Counts of Sponheim and the Archbishop of Mainz in the years 1279 to 1281, Burg Johannisberg, Burg Heppenheft and Burg Rheinstein were razed by the Mainz people. Heppenheft Castle and Rheinstein Castle were rebuilt by the Archbishop by 1315 and the ministerial Heppenhefters, who obviously remained loyal, were used as castle men. The noble-free line of the Rheingrafen that had prevailed up to that point had to withdraw to the Nahe and the Archbishop of Mainz was able to consolidate his influence in the Rheingau in the sense of territorial rule. Nevertheless, a Rhine count was then again entrusted with the - not hereditary - office of Vice-Cathedral in the Rheingau , as the Embrichones had held the office several times before in the years since 1108.

Archbishop Ruthard von Mainz came from the Embrichonen. Bishop Embricho von Würzburg came from the Mainz district and may have been its Nepos . The two bishops can be considered the most important representatives of the family.
