The Evangelical St. George Church in Gächingen is a fortified church in the Bad Urach church district of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg . It is located in the Gächingen district of St. Johann in the Reutlingen district .

history

During construction work, the foundations of a Carolingian wooden chapel from the 8th to 9th centuries were exposed in the church floor. Some of the elements of the church that can still be seen today date back to the 11th century: Parts of the Romanesque north wall and the Romanesque tower date from this time, as do the remains of frescoes behind the organ.

St. George's Church was built as a fortified church. The church and large parts of the associated cemetery are still enclosed by an enclosure wall. The windows on the north wall are still recognizable as loopholes.

Gächingen was the central place ( original parish ) for the surrounding villages during the Christianization of the Swabian Alb . With the Georgskirche the first church of the parish was built and the pastor was responsible for the villages from Sirchingen to Kohlstetten and from Steingebron to Bleichstetten .

The church got its current size and shape through an extension at the beginning of the Thirty Years War . The base year for today's church, which is given as 1619 , also falls during this period . This date can be found on an archway above the main entrance.

In 1954 Helmuth Rilling founded the Gächinger Kantorei , which is now based in Stuttgart and is known worldwide , at the Georgskirche .

The last renovation of the interior took place in 2009. The church has 240 seats.

local community

The Evangelical Community of Gächingen has its own rectory, which is also responsible for the neighboring village of Bleichstetten.
