Emil Naef

Emil Naef (born December 23, 1851 in Aarburg , Canton Aargau ; † February 9, 1910 in Aarau ) was a Swiss veterinarian , editor , journalist , translator and statistician .

life and work

Naef was the son of the veterinarian Johann Jakob and studied veterinarian at the veterinary school in Bern. He then stayed in America for a long time and after his return worked at the bank in Zofingen, where he met Arnold Künzli . Naef was a member of the constitutional council for the sixth Aargau constitution of 1885 and made valuable contributions in particular in economic questions.

In 1882 Naef was elected secretary of the Interior Directorate and campaigned for the new federal "Factory Act". Later Naef worked as an editor for the Zofinger Tagblatt and wrote regularly as a journalist for other daily newspapers . He also commented on economic and insurance issues in domestic and foreign specialist publications.

Naef was elected canton statistician in 1887 and was one of the founders of the "Teachers' and Orphans' Insurance Fund" and the "Civil Servants' Pension Fund". In addition, he oversaw the savings banks and the workers' protection legislation. As Naef spoke several languages ​​and had a good knowledge of Russian and Turkish, he was a sought-after translator for municipal and cantonal administration.

In 1909, Naef received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bern for his services .
