Rungwerth was the fourth of seven children of a master blacksmith . After primary school, he attended the Progymnasium and then completed an apprenticeship at the elementary school teacher seminar in Osterburg by 1886.

In 1886 he started teaching at the Olvenstedter School. He taught a class with 125 students here - with a salary of 900 marks a year.

He dealt intensively with the history of the village of Olvenstedt and the surrounding area. He wrote a book on the "Heimatgeschichte des Kreises Wolmirstedt" and in 1896 wrote the "Geschichte des Dorfes Olvenstedt".

In April 1945 American troops reached Olvenstedt. Artillery fire by the Wehrmacht resulted in a hit in his living room. Rungwerth died two days later after a leg amputation as a result of an injury he suffered.

The city of Magdeburg , in which Olvenstedt was incorporated in 1979, named a street ( Emil-Rungwerth-Weg ) after him.
