Emile Linus Alfred Wijntuin , nickname Emile (born September 22, 1924 in Totness , Suriname , † May 7, 2020 in Paramaribo ) was a Surinamese politician and chairman of the National Assembly of Suriname (DNA).

Life

Wijntuin was of Afro-Urinamese origin. When slavery was abolished in the Dutch colony of Suriname on July 1, 1863, the surname Wijntuin was given to former slaves from the Mary’s Hope cotton plantation in Coronie .

Political career

Emile Wijntuin became a member of this party in 1946, the year the Christian-democratically oriented Progressieve Surinaamse Volkspartij (PSV) was founded.

In 1958 he was elected for the first time as a member of the PSV in the States of Suriname , the forerunner of the DNA.

After the parliamentary elections in 1973, Wijntuin was elected chairman of parliament on December 28, 1973. The PSV was one of four parties of the Nationale Partij Kombinatie , which was supposed to enforce the proclaimed electoral goal, the independence of Suriname. He then also became the first parliamentary speaker of the Republic of Suriname, which became independent on November 25, 1975.

As a result of the military coup on February 25, 1980, Parliament was dissolved on August 15, 1980, and this also ended the parliamentary career of Emile Wijntuin.

In 2006 Emile Wijntuin was elected honorary chairman of the PSV.
