from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emilio Ballagas (* 1908 in Camagüey , Cuba , † 1954 in Havana , Cuba) was a Cuban writer.

Ballagas studied philology at the University of Havana and graduated with a doctorate . He was then entrusted with a teaching position at the Santa Clara College of Education . He later moved to a similar institution in Havana as a lecturer.

As early as 1930 he made his debut with his poetry anthology “Júbilo y fuga”. Since then, Ballagas has also been a freelancer for Revista Cubana magazine . Between 1920 and 1930 he also made two study trips to and through Europe and the USA.

reception

With his first work, Ballagas already showed himself to be a representative of Poesía pura . This emerged as a further development of Creacionismo by Vicente Huidobro and reached its climax in Mariano Brull in Cuba.

Ballagas' literary work spans an arc from Afro-Cuban rhythms to neo-romantic elegies and ends with echoes of religious themes in his later works. His early lyrical oeuvre was rather freely formed; Over time he discovered more and more the possibilities of the design language of decime , lira and sonnet .
