Emily O'Reilly (* 1957 in Tullamore , County Offaly ) is an Irish journalist and author . Since October 1, 2013, it is the European Ombudsman ( European Ombudsman ) of the European Union and the first woman in that office.

education

Emily O'Reilly attended University College in Dublin and graduated in European languages ​​and literature in 1979. In 1980 she graduated from Trinity College , Dublin with a degree in Education . She later also attended Harvard University .

Professional activities

From the late 1970s she worked as a journalist for The Irish Press and Sunday Tribune , and then for The Sunday Times and The Sunday Business Post . In the late 1990s she was on the editorial staff of Magill magazine .

From 2003 she was the first Irish Ombudsman for six years and was re-elected in 2009 for the next six years. On July 3, 2013, the European Parliament elected her as European Ombudsman. On December 18, 2019, the European Parliament extended her mandate for a further six years.

Her predecessor as European Ombudsman was Nikiforos Diamandouros .

Emily O'Reilly was named Journalist of the Year and Woman Journalist of the Year in Ireland. She also received a Nieman Fellowship in journalism early in her career .

In 2008 she received from the National University of Ireland , the honorary doctorate in law for their work to promote human rights. and an Honorary Doctorate from University College Dublin in 2014 for her service as the Irish Ombudsman.

In 2017, she was awarded the Schwarzkopf Europe Prize for her work as European Ombudsman .
