The Emlichheim oil field is an oil deposit near the municipality of Emlichheim in the county of Bentheim . The main part of the oil field is located in the directly adjacent Dutch town of Schoonebeek and despite the same formation is managed as a separate field due to the state border. The Schoonebeek oil field was interrupted and dismantled in 1996 due to unprofitable production, but it has been in production again since 2011 after being redeveloped. In 1943, the field was opened up with the successful Emlichheim 1 well . The fields Emlichheim West and Emlichheim Süd , which were developed in the meantime , were closed again in the sixties. The operator of the field is the BASF subsidiary Wintershall .

The oil field

The Emlichheim 1 production well was the first production well to find what it was looking for in Emlichheim. Drilling began on May 26, 1943 and was completed on November 4 of the same year. The field has been officially in operation since May 12, 1944. The crude oil is stored in the Bentheim sandstone at a depth of 800 meters

The steam flooding process has also been used in Emlichheim since 1968 .

In 2010, 90 production wells were active in the field. By using the steam flooding process, an attempt is made to keep the production constant at 150,000 tons per year. For this purpose, the oil stored in the layers is mobilized by means of steam.

After desalination and pretreatment, the extracted crude oil is transported to Osterwald by tank wagon. From there a pipeline runs to the refinery in Lingen-Holthausen .

Just in time for the 700th anniversary of the Emlichheim community, the 10 millionth tonne of crude oil was also extracted from the Emlichheim field.
