Emmanuel Niyonkuru

Emmanuel Niyonkuru (born July 20, 1962 in Rutegama , † January 1, 2017 in Bujumbura ) was a Burundian bank manager and politician .

biography

Emmanuel Niyonkuru studied at the University of Burundi at the Faculty of Economics and Administration from 1987 to 1991 , where he received a degree in Economic Policy. From January 1992 to August 2015 he worked for the Banque de la république du Burundi (BRB), where he was most recently deputy director. While working for the bank, he was a member of the FRB's Monetary Policy Committee and a member of the National Committee on National Economic Development. Niyonkuru belonged to a group of representatives from Burundi who worked on the implementation of the East African Monetary Union (EAMU).

He was elected Senator for the 2015-2020 legislative period for the Muramvya constituency. On August 24, 2015, he became Minister for Water, Environment, Spatial and Urban Planning. In addition, Niyonkuru was Chairman of the Ministerial Conference of the Nile Countries (NELCOM) and Chairman of the Ministerial Conference on Forestry in Central Africa (COMIFAC).

Niyonkuru belonged to the Tutsi minority. He was married and had three children.

Niyonkuru was shot and killed in an assassination attempt at the age of 54 .
