Emmenagogue

As an emmenagogue (from Gr. Ἔμμηνος émmenos "in the month, monthly", ἐμμήνια emménia " menstruation " and ἀγωγός agogós "leading") a medicine is called which stimulates the menstrual period. A distinction is made between internal and external Emmenagogues .

In folk medicine, phytopharmaceuticals such as cloves , rosemary , saffron , monk's pepper or mustard are used for internal use . External Emmenagogues, such as warm baths, are used to stimulate blood flow, while the leech treatment has a decongestant effect .

In some internally applied emmenagogues is at higher doses, the risk of them in case of pregnancy abortion act.
