history

Emmensteg at low tide

After the Emme flood in August 2005, there was no longer any hope for the old steel rope footbridge built around 1930. The foundations were badly undermined and driftwood had destroyed the steel structure and interrupted the connection between Utzenstorf and Bätterkinden.

The project competition carried out by the Bätterkinden municipal council in 2006 included a foot and cycle path bridge with a clear width of 2 m, as this also had to be accessible for the municipal vehicle. The shape and dimensions of the new wooden construction should take into account the requirements of the Bern Heritage Protection and integrate the property gently into the environment of the nature reserve.

The winning project submitted showed a solution with a main bridge with a span of 47 m and approach bridges west and east each 30 m in length. The tight space, the high load-bearing capacity of the wood with low weight and the good prefabrication were just a few reasons for using wood as a material for this bridge. After assembling the individual elements in the foreland area, the 28-tonne construction was lifted with a 250-tonne pneumatic crane in April 2007, swiveled over the assembly area and moved onto the prepared supports. The tight space conditions, the work at lofty heights and the use of a 250-tonne pneumatic crane presented a particular challenge.

The constructive wood protection was already given the greatest attention in the planning phase, so that the bridge can carry out its service for the next few decades without any problems. Wear layers protect the structure permanently and safely and can be easily replaced at the end of their service life.
