The company was founded on November 29, 2013 with share capital of CHF 20,000 and entered in the commercial register on December 4, 2013. The founding of the company was necessary in order to be able to resume operations with tourist trains on the routes closed by the BLS . For this purpose, the two line concessions were transferred from BLS Netz AG to Emmentalbahn GmbH in 2013 . In 2014, all railway facilities between Sumiswald-Grünen (km 4,890) and Huttwil (km 18,475) as well as from Sumiswald-Grünen (km 0.140) up to and including Wasen became the property of Emmentalbahn GmbH . This also includes the Affoltern-Weier , Häusermoos, Dürrenroth and Wasen train stations , which have an architectural style with a crooked roof based on the farms in the Emmental . Even the stops are equipped with wooden houses in this special architectural style.

At least the railway line between Sumiswald and Huttwil has been in operation again since autumn 2014. In particular, the Genossenschaft Museumsbahn Emmental (a special purpose association of the two organizations Verein Historische Eisenbahn Emmental and Verein Dampfbahn Bern ) is planning regular trips again.
